On November 14, 2007 the City of Chicago notified the Village that they will be increasing their water rates by 15% effective January 1, 2008, another 15% January 1, 2009, and 14% January 1, 2010. The Village has been working hard to identify options to fight this increase, including an analysis of alternative water supply sources, legal remedies, and cooperating with the 48 other municipalities that purchase water directly from Chicago. The City of Chicago had given no prior indications to the Village that such an increase was forthcoming.
In order for the Village to afford the purchase of water from Chicago and to adequately invest in our water and sewer infrastructure, the Village Board passed a 15% water rate adjustment, commensurate with the City of Chicago adjustment, effective February 1, 2008. Currently, the Village maintains the 8th lowest water rate as compared to 31 other area municipalities.
The Village will continue to research alternative water supplies in an effort to deliver the best quality water to our residents at the lowest possible price.
