The Police Department is organized into the following components: the Office of the Chief of Police; Policing Services; the Detective Unit; and the Support Services Unit.
The Office of the Chief of Police consists of the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief of Police, the Executive Secretary, the Community Service Officer, and the School Crossing Guards.
POLICING SERVICES The Deputy Chief of Police commands and coordinates the operations of Policing Services which includes the three Patrol Watches, midnights (1st Watch), days (2nd Watch), and afternoons (3rd Watch). Each has a lieutenant, a sergeant and a varying number of police officers assigned to it. These provide policing services to the community: patrol, responding to calls for service, performing initial investigations, traffic enforcement, and other public safety and service activities. The Village is normally divided into three beats for patrol purposes. The three beat cars are often augmented by a fourth (or "umbrella") car and a traffic officer.
Traffic Unit
The Traffic Unit consists of a lieutenant and one police officer. This is not a full-time, separate component of the Department. The lieutenant's primary responsibility is that of a watch commander, while the police officer will sometimes staff a patrol beat. The responsibilities of the Traffic Unit are selective enforcement, preparing traffic surveys/studies, accident investigation, and liaison with the Streets and Alleys Committee of the Village Board of Trustees.
Tactical Unit
The Tactical Unit is likewise not a full-time component of the Department, but is operational depending on needs and available staffing. Officers are assigned to the unit from those who submit requests. Usually, two officers are taken from patrol duties and assigned to the unit on a temporary basis. The assignment rotates among those who were selected, and the unit is coordinated by a supervisor. The duties of Tactical Unit members include: preventive patrol, assisting beat officers, assisting in follow-up investigations, traffic/parking enforcement, and community service activities. Tactical Unit members generally wear plainclothes and use an unmarked squad car.
DETECTIVE UNIT
The Detective Unit, commanded by a lieutenant, is responsible for follow-up investigations of offenses reported to the Police Department. The Detective Unit Supervisor reports to the Deputy Chief of Police.
SUPPORT SERVICES UNIT
The Support Services Unit consists of the Communications and Information Services Sections, and is headed by the Detective Unit Commander. The Communications Section is responsible for both police and fire dispatching, and is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week operation. The Information Services Section is normally staffed from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Mondays through Fridays.
PERSONNEL
The Police Department has an authorized full-time strength of 34 sworn officers and 11 civilian employees. The sworn complement consists of the chief, the deputy chief, four lieutenants, three sergeants, and 25 police officers. The full-time civilian staff consists of the executive secretary, PIMS (Police Information Management System) manager, records clerk, community service officer, and seven communications operators. Part-time employees consist of one communications operator and two school crossing guards
